The Presence & the Power by Gerald Hawthorne

April 8, 2009

I recently came across this book in a footnote and tracked down a copy through another professor who knew his pastor had the book. My efforts did not disappoint me.

Hawthorne, an Emeritus Professor of Greek at Wheaton, writes an intriguing description of Christ’s incarnational relationship with the Holy Spirit. In spite of apparently denyinghawthorne impeccability, Hawthorne does a good job developing the humanity of Christ and His dependence upon the Spirit in a way that I not previously read. Originally printed by Word in 1991, the book has been reprinted by Wipf & Stock (Eugene, OR) in 2003. The book centers on the kenotic theory of the incarnation, though Hawthorne does not like that terminology. One of the best chapters is entitled, “The Spirit as the Key to the Kenosis.”

The book has been returned to its owner but I will look to purchase it in the near future.
